St. Louis
Caesar in the New World - Assignment 5 of 10
AD 700

Congratulations on your recent success against the Gauls in the Finger Lakes! The emperor has heard of your military skill and wishes to offer you an assignment that will let you use it in support of the Empire's westward expansion.

You are to found a large city at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, at the site named St. Louis. There is plentiful farmland in the area, and to the southwest are located some of the only deposits of iron ore in the center of the continent. Since the Mississippi is navigable, you will be able to trade both by land and by water.

Alas, Rome's other colonies in the area lack both weapons and trained soldiers. The Emperor plans to call on you regularly to supply troops for the defense of neighboring cities. The local barbarians, already aware of this plan, have been raiding from the south and west, and you should expect these raids to increase in ferocity as your city grows. However, the barbarians, even in great numbers, should prove no match for well-prepared Roman defenses.

If you can supply victorious armies while defending your own borders, you can anticipate the opportunity to buld several triumphal arches. These, combined with your city's abundant resources, ought to inspire some of Rome's patricians to move to St. Louis, making it the most prosperous city yet in the New World.
