San Francisco
Caesar in the New World - Assignment 9 of 10
AD 900

As a true Roman, you must have missed being so far from the sea on your recent assignments. That is about to change, since the Emperor has chosen you to govern the new provice of California on the west coast of the new continent. He has selected for the first major city a site whose resources exceed what can be found anywhere in Europe. Almost anything can be grown, mined, or manufactured here. It is even rumored that the land is so rich that deposits of iron spring up wherever our road engineers plant their signposts.

You are to found a large and prosperous city on this site. Since Rome's coffers are low at the moment, the Emperor expects you to earn the funds that you will need for bridge building, but he has provided enough for you to establish a viable settlement. Once your industries and trade are established, you should be able to build fine palaces. The Emperor, who has to date found the New World too rustic for his taste, is contemplating a visit to San Francisco, and he will expect to find dwellings worthy of him.

The rich resources of California have not escaped notice. A group of Macedonians who claim to descend from Alexander the Great have settled to the east of your site, and they resent our competition in production of oil and wine. Expect small groups to challenge you early, and be prepared eventually for major assaults. This same group has been troubling our colonies to the north, and you may be called upon for assistance. You would be well advised to keep some water between your best buildings and these formidable warriors.

Develop the wealth of this province fully, meet the requests of the Emperor, and he is likely to grant you the chance to join the greatest figures of Roman history. Fail, and you will find yourself back in the Midwest.
