Caesar in the New World - Assignment 7 of 10
AD 800

As the Empire expands over the new continent it becomes obvious that Rome needs even more food. My scouts have found a land that could easily become the breadbasket of Nova Roma, since about the only place you can't farm is in the middle of the rivers. You are directed to found a city there and send ample amounts of food to the east. We will need wheat for Roman citizens, vegetables (maize) for our native auxiliaries, and meat for everyone.

There are four native tribes close to the eastern border of your new province. The Oto, Omaha, and Ponca live close to the major river of the province while the more numerous Pawnee live farther out onto the Prarie. All four are willing to live peacefully with you provided you treat them with respect. The Sioux to northwest and their allies, the Cheyenne and Arapahoe, to their south consider the entire province as part of their hunting grounds. The Comanche and Kiowa to the south have been known to raid this far north, and while they might prefer Oto or Pawnee scalps they certainly wouldn't object to Roman ones to decorate their lodges. All of these tribes are capable of mounting massive raids, so don't fault your defensive preparations.

Clay is present in the bottomlands. I'm told that iron isn't present in the province, so you will have to buy it from the Great Lakes provinces. There are a few stands of trees near the rivers, mainly in the tribal land of the natives, and it might be easier just to buy furniture from other Roman cities. The river flowing from the west can be a major deluge in spring but during most of the year is little more than a wading pool. Don't count on it to keep raiders from crossing from north to south, especially further west. While this is an agricultural province, I expect all of my cities to represent the best of Roman civilization and have set appropriately high goals for Culture and Prosperity.
