Caesar in the New World - Assignment 2 of 10
AD 550
Author: Cryptid

Af ter your time in Iceland, you are probably longing for the sight of a tree. In this assignment you will see plenty of them. Our explorers have selected a site for a new colony -- farther north than I would have liked, but our ships are still having trouble crossing the ocean, and this site is easy to reach via Iceland. The emperor has provided generous startup funds in the expectation of receiving regular shipments of timber for the Roman shipbuilding industry. In addition, you will be able to sell weapons to one of our other colonies that was foolishly founded on a site with no iron. Grapes, of a species unknown in Europe, grow in abundance. I personally find the wine made from these grapes to be undrinkable, but the patricians of the old Empire, who prize diversity in wine more highly than quality, will probably pay good money for it.

Found a settlement of 6000 citizens and give them all a comfortable standard of living. Without access to oil you will be unable to attract the patrician classes, and so the emperor will settle for modest prosperity. Your goal is to move on to a more hospitable climate quickly, and if you can meet the emperor's requests in a timely manner and gain his favor, I will recommend you for a post where you can build in a grander style.

Dense forests separate your initial settlement from good farmland, and you will have to clear them in order to expand. But be cautious, since these same forests also protect you from the local wolves and from bands of local savages who resent our presence.
